2021 Interior Design Trend Forecast

Out with the old and in with the new (at last!). 2020 is finally over after what has felt like the longest and most bizarre year of most of our lives and 2021 is here to bring us new starts and new opportunities for change, and where better to begin than at home. Read on to discover our forecast for the top trends to refresh and reinvent your space in 2021.

Cottagecore

Cottagecore is here to bring the outdoors inside and, having spent most of 2020 stuck inside, is unsurprisingly topping many lists as a top trend for this year. Combining comfort and harmony between the new and old, the Cottagecore aesthetic took off on social media and centres around the ideas of simple living and oneness with nature. Think classic mellow, muted palettes, handmade furnishings and pastoral pleasure mixed with modern trends of sustainability, eco living and mindfulness for a luxe, traditional style.

Ocean Tones

Once again bringing elements of nature into our homes, adding touches of blue around our homes this year to evoke the sky and sea will be a top trend of 2021. Use pastel aqua tones on the walls and furnishings of your living spaces or bedrooms to bring a tranquil, comforting aura to your home. Or follow the Instagram trend of introducing deep inky hues into your bathrooms or kitchen; combine with gold finishings for a look which calls to mind the midnight sky or dark. ocean waves.

Japandi

Centred on Japanese minimalism mixed with elements of Scandinavian and Japanese furniture, this trend has been vastly popular with interior designers in 2020 so expect to see much more of it this year. The Japandi design trend delicately balances the best aspects of both influences, combining Japanese elegance and minimalism with Nordic hygge (comfort and cosiness). Rather than bright whites or dominant colours, think neutral, muted tones of beige and taupe found in natural materials like stone, wood or natural fibre materials. Try balancing touches of pastel or rich dark accent colours within your space to add interest to the minimalist decor.
