Sustainability: 2019 Interior Trend
By Paloma Harrington-Griffin, HSA
As we become more aware of how our daily lives impact the environment, this year’s interior trends turn their eyes to our décor choices and how we can implement more environmentally-friendly options into our projects.
The word of the year is SUSTAINABILITY.
Pointed out as one of the strongest and most versatile interior trends of 2019, sustainability is being felt and seen across the industry with the use of natural materials like wood, sustainable fabrics and alternatives such as animal-free leather and pieces that are entirely recycled or upcycled.
According to Lisa White, director of lifestyle and interiors at trend forecaster WGSN, sustainable designs will be as aesthetically desirable as they are sustainable, and plastic will be treated as a precious material, with consumers avoiding its single-use in interiors as well.
People are becoming increasingly interested in knowing where a piece was produced and by whom, so sustainable and ethical sourcing are not to be ignored by brands who wish to stay ahead.
The mantra “less is more†will be repeated throughout the whole year for those who follow the sustainability trend. The key is to be mindful and purposeful about purchasing behaviour, knowing what is being bought and why, prioritising pieces that translate values and have meaning.
This shift towards sustainable products is not only a preference, it is a responsibility, and hopefully, it came to stay.
